The origin of our straws

The Mekong Delta in Vietnam

The Mekong Delta in Vietnam, located southwest of the country, is fed by the Mekong River. This river, the longest in Southeast Asia, splits into nine tributaries that flow into the sea.
The Vietnamese also refer to the Mekong as the “nine-tailed dragon.” When you zoom out from Earth, you understand why. The soil of the Mekong Delta is very fertile and the environment is characterized by a web of irrigation and drainage systems.

Throughout history, the swamps have been the perfect habitat for various plant and animal species, including the reed “Grey Sedge”. But due to the rise of the plastics industry, the demand for reed products has dropped drastically.
Consequence? The reed beds became very scarce.
A reason for the Vietnamese government, together with local entrepreneurs and NGOs, to create new reed beds!

This way, we restore the area and protect endangered species, such as the Sarus cranes, which breed and hibernate in these reed beds.

In honor to Vietnamese traditions

For centuries, sedge has played an important role in the development of Vietnam. Along the banks of the Mekong River, people have built villages to grow, harvest, and weave sedge. This craft has been passed on from generation to generation with pride. It made it possible for the Vietnamese population to provide for their livelihood. But then plastic came. And the Vietnamese traditions, with their woven baskets and mats, faded into the background. That’s a shame!

Through close cooperation with our Vietnamese partners, we breathe new life into this form of agriculture and support the local economy in a sustainable way. We pay tribute to the “Grey Sedge” and thus to the history and culture of Vietnam.

Will you join the challenge with us?

SEDGE wants to contribute to a better future for generations to come.
We want to create awareness among consumers about ecology and other facets of nature. All choices – big or small – matter. Our story starts with a straw.
In the long term, we want to complete the circle. Not only are we using the reed beds and taking care of them, but we help the ecological cycle too, by composting the straws.

In addition, our goal is to play a positive role in the evolution of a sustainable society and the conservation of Vietnamese traditions. Local farmers, nature, and the community have to profit. That’s what drives us!

Furthermore, as an organization, we strive for stable and long-term relationships between equal partners, because they allow us to do what we love. Together we stand stronger.
